15+ Popular Indonesian Rappers Musician from Time to Time




Nesianetwork.id - Rap is one of the four elements of Hip-hop culture. Rap is a vocal technique that uses words quickly, while the perpetrator is called a rapper. Usually, rap is accompanied by a DJ or by a band.

Rap can also be traced back to its African roots, where centuries before Hip-Hop music existed, West Africa had provided rhythmic stories called griots, over drums and sparse instrumentation. This connection has been recognized by today's artists.

Usually, rappers are like regular singers, namely singing solo. Examples are Nas, Jay-Z and Kanye West. There are also rappers who are members of bands, for example Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park. Generally, rappers are black because many rappers come from suburban areas in the United States.

Among the few rappers who are white are Eminem, Macklemore, and Pitbull. Rappers are often called MC or Emcee (Master of Ceremony). In Jamaica, the term rapper can be called Dee-Jay like Sean Paul.

In Indonesia itself, rap music has developed and become one of the music genres that is getting attention. Local musicians whose rap or hip-hop music has enlivened the Indonesian music scene include Iwa K, Soul ID, Saykoji, Fade to Black (Bondan Prakoso & Fade 2 Black), Batik Tribe, 8 Ball.

The newest type of music available is Trip Hop, which is a combination of Jazz and Hip-Hop. One of the Indonesian Trip Hop musicians who has strong Rap elements is Aji Kikuta.

1. Benjamin S.
H. Benyamin Sueb is an Indonesian actor, comedian, director and singer. Benyamin has produced more than 75 music albums and 53 film titles. Benyamin Sueb is included in the list of The Immortals: 25 Greatest Indonesian Artists of All Time according to Rolling Stone Indonesia magazine.



2. Saykoji
Ignatius Rosoinaya Penyami, better known as Saykoji or Igor Saykoji, is an Indonesian rapper, singer and actor. Online songs were very popular in their time.


3. Iwa K

Iwa Kusuma, better known by his stage name Iwa K, is an Indonesian rapper. His love for rap stems from his enjoyment of breakdancing. One of his most popular songs is entitled Free.


4. Bondan Prakoso & Fade 2 Black

Bondan Prakoso & Fade 2 Black is a musical collaboration between Bondan Prakoso (musician, bassist) and Fade2Black (rap group consisting of Titz, Santoz and Lezzano).

In 2004 Bondan intended to create a music project that combined various types of music into a new musical form. He then invited Titz, a rapper who was his campus friend at the University of Indonesia, to join. However, Titz feels that this band will be even stronger if his group, Fade 2 Black, joins.


At the end of 2004 Bondan & Fade 2 Black began to enter the recording studio. They also created several songs with touches of Rap, Rock and Funk. Bondan Prakoso was responsible for the instruments, looping and arrangements, while Fade 2 Black worked on the song lyrics.


5. Farid Hardja
Farid Hardja is a singer and songwriter in the Indonesian pop music industry. The figure of Farid was initially known for his appearance similar to Elton John: he had a slightly bald head and changed glasses, and at the end of his life he dressed like a merchant from mainland Africa.


6. Morgue Vanguard
Herry Sutresna (born 21 June 1974) is a musician, rapper and writer. He was one of the founders of the hip hop collective Homicide in 1994. With the moniker Morgue Vanguard, with Homicide, he made three albums and one mini album before Homicide disbanded in 2007.

After Homicide, Ucok made his solo album "Fateh" assisted by DJ from New York, Still. Ucok is an alumnus of English Literature at Padjadjaran University and the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Bandung Institute of Technology - who was later active in the People's Democratic Party (PRD) during the twilight of the New Order.

7. Blakumuh
Fronted by Doyz and Erik, Blakumuh is actually similar to Homicide in several songs, which often raise social issues and conditions in their music.


8. Syndicate 31
Syndicate 31 is an old rap (Hip Hop) group that was founded in the mid-1990s. One of its popular songs is the Original Soundtrack by Kera Sakti, which the 90s generation definitely knows all the lyrics by heart.


9. Pandji Pragiwaksono
Known through the reality show Kena Deh, then he had a career as a Rap singer with several albums and now we know him as a Stand Up Comedian and feature film actor.

Jayawijaya Parulian Nababan or known as Joe Million (born January 20 1992) is an Indonesian rapper. During his career, Joe Million has released seven albums, namely three studio albums and one mini album, including three collaboration albums with Indra Menus.


12. Mr. thirteenth
Muhammad Syaifullah or known as Tuan Tiga Belas is a rapper from Indonesia.


13. Ebith Beat A
Ebith Brat A is an Islamic rapper from Bandung who mixes his religious songs in a Hip Hop format. The style of music is simple enough to make the ears itch.

The lyrics he conveys seem critical. There are several songs that use regional languages, one of which is SAHA NGARAN MANEH SAHA. In fact, this song has won the top position for weeks on various charts, both the Indonesian song chart, the indie chart, and the request chart on radio.

Towards Ramadhan 2006 he released an album entitled "WHEN THE HEART SPEAKS" which combines elements of nasyid and Hip Hop. Ebith's abilities have received good appreciation from musicians, this has been proven by Ebith having sung with Haddat Alwi, Kuburan Band and many more.

M. Iqbal is a Maluku rapper born in Malang who started rapping in 2003 in Jogja.


15. SoulID
Soul ID is a music group from Indonesia which was formed in 2002. This music group currently consists of 3 members, namely EndrumarcH, Tabib Qiu, and Jaydee. The genres of this music group are Hip-hop, R&B, and Pop.


16. Mizta D
Mizta D is an Indonesian rapper. Released his first album in 2005, entitled Back 2 The Ol' Skool.

Joshua Matulessy (born 8 April 1985), known professionally as JFlow, is an Indonesian rapper, record producer, songwriter and actor. He and Saykoji, Guntur Simbolon, and Rendy Rainhard have a spiritual vocal group called Disciples.

JFlow has a number of albums such as Facing Your Giants and Dreambrave. Some of his famous works are "Dance Tonight" and "Unbeatable" from Energy of Asia: Official Album of Asian Games 2018.

JFlow has received four nominations for Anugerah Musik Indonesia and won one of them in the Best Rap/Hip-hop Production Work category for the song "We are One Part II". He was also nominated for the 2016 Citra Cup for Best Male Supporting Actor for his performance in the film Salawaku.


19. Young Lex
Samuel Alexander Pieter, better known as Young Lex, is an Indonesian rapper, singer, internet celebrity and actor.


20. Rich Brian
Brian Imanuel Soewarno (born 3 September 1999), known professionally as Rich Brian (formerly Rich Chigga), is an Indonesian rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is known for his viral debut single "Dat $tick", which was first released in March 2016 on SoundCloud.

The single was later certified gold by RIAA. His debut studio album, Amen, was released in 2018 and peaked at number 18 on the US Billboard 200. Brian's second studio album, The Sailor, was released in 2019. He released an EP titled 1999 in 2020. He released another EP titled Brightside in January 2022. Brian has collaborated with many artists from China and South Korea such as Chungha, Keith Ape, Jackson Wang, and Jae Park.


21. Tuan TigaBelas
Muhammad Syaifullah or known as Tuan Tiga Belas born 13 October 1985 is a rapper from Indonesia.

Mr. Thirteen knows hip hop music from the song Korn ft. Ice Cube when he was still a teenager. Upi, as he is nicknamed, was previously a street basketball athlete with an alias or a.k.a Best Keep Secret. One of them, he took part in a prestigious tournament in Indonesia, namely La Lights Streetball. Due to the serious injury he suffered, he decided to pursue a career as a rapper.
