Promoting Local Food Security Amid Fast-Food Culture: A Community Service Program (KKN) by a UNDIP Student in Rembul Hamlet, Batang

Promoting Local Food Security Amid Fast-Food Culture: A Community Service Program (KKN) by a UNDIP Student in Rembul Hamlet, Batang

Nesianetwork.idRembul Hamlet, Batang (21 July 2025) – In an effort to raise awareness about healthy eating and food sustainability, Diana Angelina, a student of English Literature from the Faculty of Humanities, Diponegoro University (UNDIP), carried out a community education program in Rembul Hamlet, Tumbrep Village, Bandar District, Batang Regency. This activity was part of the KKN-T IDBU 50 work program, focusing on strengthening local food security in the face of increasing Western fast-food culture.

In recent years, many residents of Rembul, especially mothers, have become dependent on fast food such as Rocket Chicken because of its convenience. Children often prefer fast food over home-cooked meals, making it a regular part of their diet. Unfortunately, this habit can lead to serious health problems, such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. Moreover, instant food packaging contributes to environmental damage through increased plastic waste and carbon emissions.

Diana's program, titled “Local Food Security In The Face of Westernization,” aimed to raising awareness of the residents on the importance of returning to local food sources. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), food resilience is based on four key pillars: availability, access, utilization, and stability. These pillars are now under threat due to issues like land-use conversion, environmental degradation, and uncertain water supplies.

The awareness-raising program involved presentations and interactive discussions with the residents. The student introduced various sources of local carbohydrates such as corn, sago, cassava, sweet potato, and taro, as well as protein-rich ingredients like tempeh, tofu, legumes, and local fish. The student also shared innovative ways to transform these ingredients into modern and attractive dishes, such as sago pizza, purple sweet potato brownies, and tempeh burgers, which could appeal to younger generations.

In addition, the program encouraged food diversification by introducing practical recipes like healthy noodles made from moringa leaves, cassava chips, corn-based instant porridge, sago oatmeal, and plant-based milk from local legumes. These innovations aim to support urban lifestyles while staying rooted in local agriculture, promoting both nutrition and sustainability.

Through this initiative, Team 50 KKN-T IDBU hopes to motivate families to prepare healthier meals at home and reduce their dependence on fast food, and also aims to help the residents better understand the value of using local food products for the sake of health, the economy, and the environment. This program demonstrates how a small initiative led by a student can bring positive change and support food security in rural areas.

The site plan has been meticulously designed to cover an expansive area of 7 hectares, strategically located adjacent to the Sawur River, which enhances the natural beauty and appeal of the site. The decision to select this particular location was guided by the insights and recommendations of Mr. Sukrisno, the village head of Sukorejo, ensuring that the development aligns with the community's vision and needs. Ahmad Syahandra Yudhistira, one of the student involved in the design of this area, emphasized the importance of location selection in fostering a successful tourism experience. REPOUCH, Crafting Health in the Backyard: Innovation of Rhizome Pouch from Family Medicinal Plants Accompanied by Community Service Program (KKN) Students and Pharmacy Program Study Lecturers, Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University

Nesianetwork.id - Bandungan Village, August 14th, 2024 – In an effort to improve community welfare through the utilization of family medicinal plants, Mooisy Nataly Siregar, a student of the Community Service Program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata) at Diponegoro University, carried out a work program titled "Optimization of Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA)" in collaboration with lecturers from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine, UNDIP. This program was conducted during the KKN in Bandungan Village, Jatinom District, Klaten Regency, and received positive responses from the local residents. This work program was implemented on August 1st 2024, with 32 members of the Women's Farmers Group participating (Kelompok Wanita Tani).

The program aims to empower the community in utilizing family medicinal plants as a source of alternative medicine. As part of this initiative, demonstrations and training sessions were held on how to create a product called "Repouch," a rhizome mix in a pouch that is expected to boost immunity and treat colds and coughs. In the socialization event, Mooisy, along with pharmacy lecturers Dr. Khairul Anam, M.Si, and Fitri Wulandari, M.Clin.Pharm., apt., provided knowledge about various types of medicinal plants that are easy to prepare and obtain, such as ginger, turmeric, temulawak, lemongrass, stevia, and lime. The training was enthusiastically attended by members of the Women Farmers Group (Kelompok Wanita Tani) and health cadres in the village.

Collaboration with pharmacy lecturers from the Faculty of Medicine, UNDIP, added significant value to this program. The lecturers not only provided theoretical knowledge about the benefits of medicinal plants but also practical knowledge on the simple preparation of traditional herbal drinks. This gave the community a more comprehensive understanding of the correct use of medicinal plants.

This work program successfully raised community awareness of the importance of family medicinal plants. Residents who previously lacked knowledge on how to utilize these plants are now more educated and motivated to process family medicinal plants in a simple yet effective manner. Additionally, some residents have started consuming TOGA to meet their family's health needs. As a follow-up, it is hoped that this program will continue with ongoing support from KKN students and pharmacy lecturers. Future plans include regular monitoring to ensure the program's sustainability and the optimization of benefits for the community.

This program not only succeeded in optimizing the use of family medicinal plants in Bandungan Village but also strengthened the relationship between the university and the community through constructive collaboration. It is hoped that programs like this can continue to be implemented in other regions to support independent and sustainable community health.

Zero Waste Program by KKN Undip: Tote Bag Painting for Elementary School Students in Kedungjeruk Village

Zero Waste Program by KKN Undip: Tote Bag Painting for Elementary School Students in Kedungjeruk Village

Nesianetwork.idOn Monday, July 29, 2024, I, Maria Verena Herwinata Putri, an English Literature student at Diponegoro University, held a zero waste-themed tote bag painting program at SDN 01 Kedungjeruk as part of the KKN (community service program) in Kedungjeruk Village. I believe that language skills and awareness of global issues, such as environmental protection, can go hand in hand. Therefore, when I had the opportunity to participate in this KKN, I felt compelled to use it as a means to teach children about the importance of environmental conservation, particularly through the concept of zero waste.

Teaching zero waste to children is part of our responsibility as the older generation to instill good habits from an early age. As an English Literature student, I am often exposed to various readings and discussions highlighting environmental issues at a global level, which ultimately made me realize that change must start with ourselves and should be instilled from a young age.

With that in mind, I designed a tote bag painting program themed around zero waste. I wanted the children to not just paint, but also understand the larger message behind it. Using reusable tote bags is a small yet important step in reducing plastic waste. Through this activity, I hope to convey that every individual, no matter how small, has a role in preserving the planet.

When I taught the children at SDN 01 Kedungjeruk about zero waste, I saw an opportunity to combine my love for language and literacy with my concern for the environment. I also hope that by introducing this concept in simple language and through creative activities, the children will more easily understand and apply it in their daily lives.

Therefore, this activity not only serves as a fun learning tool but also as a first step in building a younger generation that is environmentally conscious. I believe that the knowledge I have as an English Literature student can be an effective tool in conveying important messages about sustainability to children, so they grow up to be individuals who are aware of and responsible for the environment.

Beware of Illegal Online Loans: Diponegoro University's Community Service Program (KKN) Socializes the Dangers of Illegal Online Loans in Bandungan, Klaten

Beware of Illegal Online Loans: Diponegoro University's Community Service Program (KKN) Socializes the Dangers of Illegal Online Loans in Bandungan, Klaten

Nesianetwork.id -  Bandungan, Klaten (11 August 2024) - In recent years, illegal online lending has become an increasingly troubling problem for the community, especially among rural communities who still lack knowledge about digital financial services. Many residents are trapped in the trap of illegal pinjol with very high interest rates, inhumane collection, and theft of personal data.

The latest data on 11 June 2024, OJK has found 654 illegal online loan entities on a number of sites and applications. From these problems, Students of Real Work Lecture (KKN) TIM II Diponegoro University (UNDIP) 2024 majoring in Accounting carried out socialisation activities related to the rise of illegal online loans in Bandungan Village, Jatinom District, Klaten Regency. This activity aims to provide an understanding to the community about the dangers and risks of illegal online loans (pinjol), as well as how to recognise and avoid them.

This activity was carried out as a preventive measure to protect the residents of Bandungan Village from the negative impact of illegal pinjol. This activity began with a presentation on what online lending (Peer to peer lending) is, who are the providers of online loans, the difference between legal and illegal online loans, how to check the legality of online loans, and the risks faced by users of illegal pinjol.

In the socialisation, UNDIP KKN TIM II students explained that illegal pinjol are often not registered with the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and offer a very easy lending process without clear requirements. However, behind this convenience, there are great risks such as suffocating interest, unreasonable fines, and threats to personal data security.

In addition to the material presentation, students also distributed leaflets containing information on how to report illegal pinjol, how to check the legality of pinjol, and steps that can be taken if you have already been caught in the trap of illegal pinjol. The leaflet is expected to be a practical guide for the community to be more careful and not get caught in bigger financial problems. The women of Bandungan Village PKK were very enthusiastic in participating in this socialisation activity and hoped that they could be more aware of suspicious online loan offers.

Through this socialisation activity, KKN TIM II UNDIP 2024 students hope to make a real contribution in improving the financial literacy of the community and preventing them from the threat of illegal online loans that are increasingly prevalent. It is also hoped that this activity can be the first step for the people of Bandungan Village to be more careful and intelligent in choosing digital financial services.

Elevating Toga Srikandi as a Traditional Jamu Business Through Modern Branding by A Community Service Program (KKN) Student in Timuran, Surakarta

Elevating Toga Srikandi as a Traditional Jamu Business Through Modern Branding by A Community Service Program (KKN) Student in Timuran, Surakarta

Nesianetwork.id - As a vital component of Diponegoro University (UNDIP)’s curriculum, the Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) program offers students a unique opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings. This year, a focus on the traditional jamu business, Toga Srikandi, owned by Mrs. Sum, has highlighted the significant role that students can play in enhancing the sustainability of local small businesses.

Toga Srikandi, a traditional jamu business, has been facing challenges primarily due to a lack of promotional efforts and outdated packaging that fails to attract potential customers. Recognizing these issues, Nabiila Mega, a Business Administration student participating in the KKN program, initiated a revitalization strategy aimed at increasing the appeal of the business.

This program titled “Transformasi UMKM Melalui Revitalisasi Strategi Pemasaran dan Pembaharuan Kemasan” has some strategies, including redesigning the product packaging to give it a modern and appealing look, which is crucial in catching the eye of new customers. In addition, professional business cards were created to strengthen the business's marketing efforts, making it easier to connect with potential clients and partners.

“We've always relied on word-of-mouth and our loyal customers, but with this new packaging and the professional business cards, I believe we can reach a wider audience,” said Mrs. Sum after the project was completed.

This initiative hopefully will not only revitalize the branding of Toga Srikandi, but also sets a precedent for other traditional businesses in Timuran, showing that they can thrive in the modern market for selling heritage products.

BROUGHT FROM ASTER, WITH LOVE! A Community Service Program (KKN) by Undip Student on the Collaboration of Housewives in Aster Street for Snack Supplies in Timuran, Surakarta

Nesianetwork.id – As a way to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world application, Diponegoro University (UNDIP) has long been a proponent of the Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) program. This community service initiative, which translates to 'Real Work Lecture,' is an integral part of the university's curriculum, designed to empower students with practical experience while contributing to the development of local communities. Each student is required to step out of their classrooms and blend into various societal settings, applying their knowledge to tackle real-life challenges. This year, a student majoring in Business Administration, has taken on the mission of revitalizing a small traditional snack business, showcasing the profound impact of the collaboration of academic and community.

Traditional snack businesses face several challenges nowadays that might decrease their chance to survive nowadays, and one of the reasons is the lack of initiative in business strategies and not enough developments in their branding. Realizing this issue, Nabiila Mega, a student who’s taking her part in the second team of KKN UNDIP 2023/2024, is taking a step further and helping the small businesses in RW 1, Timuran.

Originally, there are a few housewives who have small businesses to supply snacks to a bigger store. With some discussions and advice, it has been concluded that the snack business owners in RW 1 would operate better if they gather together and start accepting large orders managed by themselves under one corporation. And to complete the innovation, Nabiila also designed a new catalogue of their menu choices in order to introduce their products better to the potential customer. This makes the participants named Mrs. Cicilia and Mrs. Yuyun were very excited on this merger project named “Pengembangan Ulang Inovasi Model Bisnis dan Optimalisasi Product Knowledge Pada Konsumen”

“I am very thankful for the help to upgrade my business into a more modern way to keep up with the competitors. This would be so helpful” said Mrs. Cicilia after the project presentation.

And with this development, there is great hope that Aster Snack would become a pioneer in the progress of other MSMEs and have a positive impact on the economy of Timuran.

Before leaving for the Netherlands, Meyndi was assigned as one of the event coordinators, along with 3 other awardees, who was responsible for implementing event ideas, overseeing planning, coordinating and monitoring divisions, and acting as a liaison/contact-person with collaborative partners. The process which took almost a month has succeeded in getting 50 participants in the event, with a strong interest in learning about Indonesian culture through culinary delights.

With the theme, Indonesian Night, the social campaign served traditional cuisine consisting of 3 consecutive dishes, made a presentation, and ended with a game of Kahoot for all event participants. Each dish is rich in culture, including a variety of fried foods (bakwan, stuffed tofu, tempeh), gado-gado, chicken satay and martabak.

The event continued by providing presentation material regarding the historical aspects of batik, food dishes, and the importance of being active in broadening your knowledge of other cultures. All IISMA awardees also wore batik clothing to represent Indonesian culture, each material showing off the beauty and pride of batik prints from their own country.

From this valuable experience, it is hoped that in order to preserve Indonesian culture, we must propose a strong initiative to share knowledge and strengthen relationships with various communities locally and internationally. So, a culture that is very rich in culture will always be a legacy that can be proud of from generation to generation, even to people all over the world.

Cultural Exchange: UNDIP Students Spread Indonesian Culture by Teaching Semarang Gambang Dance in Glasgow

Cultural Exchange: UNDIP Students Spread Indonesian Culture by Teaching Semarang Gambang Dance in Glasgow

Nesianetwork.id - Spreading Indonesian culture in foreign countries is one of the goals of Melvinka Najla, a Diponegoro University (UNDIP) student participating in the student exchange program, Indonesia International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA). Through this program, Melvinka succeeded in performing and teaching the traditional Gambang Semarang dance in Glasgow, Scotland.

Of course, this success cannot occur without thorough preparation. Before leaving for Glasgow, Melvinka, together with 3 other IISMA University of Glasgow (UofG) awardees had prepared the Semarang Gambang Dance performance with regular practice. Apart from training, Melvinka has also prepared items that will be given to Gambang Semarang dance training participants. These items include batik cloth and scarves. Together with these items, Melvinka has also prepared a pocket book containing information about Indonesia, Semarang, and of course the Semarang Gambang dance.

On October 30 2023, the "Heroes Horas" event, which is an Indonesian cultural exhibition and performance event, was held by all IISMA UofG awardees at the Glasgow University Union (GUU), Glasgow, Scotland. At this event, the Gambang Semarang dance was successfully performed by Melvinka along with 3 friends in front of UofG students and staff. Apart from the dance performance, the IISMA UofG awardees also performed traditional Indonesian songs and also showcased Indonesian culture through prepared booths, such as typical Indonesian food and drink booths, batik coloring booths, and typical Indonesian craft booths.

Through this performance, several students who were interested in learning more about the Gambang Semarang dance were invited to take part in dance training. In the end, 4 UofG students took part in the Gambang Semarang dance training. From this dance training, participants learn about dance movements, the history of dance, and also the clothes worn when dancing. Apart from that, participants were also given material about Indonesia and Semarang to go through prepared presentations.

From this experience, Melvinka has high hopes that Indonesian culture can continue to be preserved and can be known on an international scale.
